Department of Statistics

  • Statistics is a field that studies the entire process from research on uncertainty to decision-making based on learning from data. Due to the development of information and communication technology, the amount of data is increasing at a rapid pace, and large data in unstructured forms that cannot be applied to existing analytical methods are emerging in fields such as genomics, climatology, neuroscience, medicine, finance and economy. Statistics seeks to extract new information from these unstructured large data and to obtain new scientific discoveries and social value from them.

Dept. of Biological Sciences

  • "As a first decade of the 21st century passes away, we are witnessing the ever-growing public interest in biomedical research and break-through researches unraveling the mysteries of life. Since working with living organisms is complicated and the secrets of life are too complex for a single biological discipline to fully decipher, more and more, the biological research requires collaboration, sharing of ideas and knowledge with other disciplines in natural sciences as well as with the fields of humanities and social sciences. Therefore, current biology has become a truly multi-faceted science, all of which sub-disciplines must achieve collateral advancement. One of the goals in the Department of Biological Sciences at Seoul National University is to pursue the understanding of biological phenomena at the molecular, cell, tissue, individual and environmental levels. It also provides key knowledge that can be widely applied to healthcare, industry, and environmental research and business."

Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences

  • Brain and cognitive science is to study the biological mechanisms of cognition and to develop the neural techniques to improve and modulate behavior and cognition. Brain and cognitive sciences target various levels for scentific investation, from the individual neuronal level to the systems level, to uncover the information processing patterns of the brain. The principles and techniques discovered during the process should help the society and individuals cope with various mental problems and develop brain-like AI in the future.
