-Abstract
When sensory information is incomplete or ambiguous, the brain relies on prior expectations about the sensory world to infer a perceptual object. A fundamental form of perceptual inference is perceptual pattern completion, exemplified by illusory contour perception. We hypothesized that neocortical pattern completion underlies the neural representation of illusory contours. We predicted that activating a subset of neurons that respond to illusory contour images would be sufficient to recreate the visually evoked neural activity pattern in the neocortex. As expected, in layer 2/3 of mouse primary visual cortex (V1), most neurons that respond to illusory contour images were faithful to segments of the image. However, a small subset of neurons responded emergently to the illusory contour (IC-encoders). Selective stimulation of IC-encoders using two-photon holographic optogenetics was sufficient to recreate the pattern of neural activity visually evoked by the illusory contour image. On the contrary, holographic stimulation of a similar number of faithful responders did not lead to neural pattern completion. In sum, we found that neocortical pattern completion gives rise to illusory contour encoding, providing a key insight into the neural mechanism of perceptual inference.
